Lighting and LED screen hire changes how a room looks and how well people can see it: warm uplighters on a wedding marquee, a spotlit stage for an awards dinner, festoon lights across a garden or a big LED wall for a product launch. Suppliers bring the fixtures, the truss, the cables, a control desk and an operator, and set it all up around your venue. Tell us the venue, the date, the number of guests and what you want to light or show, and lighting and screen companies near you send a quote directly.
Types of event lighting
Most events combine two or three kinds of light:
- Uplighters: battery or mains LED floods placed at the base of walls or tent poles to colour the room, usually in warm white, amber or your wedding colours.
- Festoon lights: strings of bulbs hung over tables, entrances and gardens for an informal, warm look.
- Stage and truss lighting: spot, wash and moving head lights for a band, speaker or dance floor, usually rigged on a stage or ground truss.
- Special effects: pin spots on centrepieces, gobo patterns on the floor and haze or smoke, used sparingly.
In a tent, lights are usually attached to the frame, so tell the supplier which marquee or tent you have.
LED walls, screens and projectors
An LED wall is made of panels that join into one bright picture, and it works in daylight and in large rooms. It is priced per square metre or per panel, and the closer the audience sits, the finer the pixel pitch you need. A projector and screen is cheaper and works well in a dark room with a few hundred seated people, but washes out in daylight. For a conference, ask about confidence monitors for speakers, a vision mixer, cameras if you want live feeds on the screens, and who supplies the laptop connections. Plan content in the right shape for the screen and send it to the technician ahead of time.
Power, rigging and safety
Modern LED lighting uses little power, but moving heads, LED walls and haze machines add up. Ask for the total load in kilowatts, and check that the venue's supply, or a generator, can carry it together with your sound system, kitchen and bar fridges. Rigging above people must be done by trained crew, on certified truss, with safety cables, and wind loading on outdoor screens needs special care. Cables across walkways should be covered with mats, and generators must be placed away from the tent and refuelled safely.
What affects the price
Prices depend on the number of fixtures, the size of the screen, setup and strike time, the operator's hours and the delivery distance. Uplighter packages for a 100-guest marquee typically start around R3,000, while an LED wall for a launch is usually quoted per square metre per day. Ask whether the price includes a lighting designer or operator, the control desk, cables and a generator, and what the overtime rate is if your event runs late.
