Events in Welkom
Welkom is a planned goldfields town with wide streets and circular layouts, and its events reflect a community working through the end of the mining era. Mines, contractors and local businesses still hold year-end functions, awards and training days at hotels, clubs and halls. Weddings and birthdays use garden venues, guesthouses and farm venues around Riebeeckstad, Odendaalsrus and Virginia. In Thabong, families hold funerals, unveilings, church services and traditional ceremonies, often in yards and halls under large hired tents. Schools use halls for matric dances and prize-givings. Summers are hot with dust and sudden storms, and winters are cold and dry. Planners and hire companies work from Welkom and Odendaalsrus.
Typical tent hire requests in the area come from:
- Funerals, church and cultural gatherings: funeral, unveiling and church tents seating hundreds on a yard or street
- Corporate functions and year-end parties: a team-building day or year-end braai under cover on a lawn or sports field
- Weddings and traditional ceremonies: a garden or farm tent over round tables, with sidewalls and lighting for an evening reception
- School events and matric dances: a fun day, prize-giving or matric function tent on the school field
- Birthdays and private parties: a backyard tent for a 21st or 50th over tables, a bar and a dance floor
- Kids' parties and baby showers: shade for a party on the lawn, with tables for food and a corner for the cake
- Conferences, launches and expos: a temporary breakaway or catering tent beside the main venue
